Artist Statement: Family Reunion

I draw much of my strength from the knowledge of my ancestors, who paved the way for me and made it possible for me to be here today.

The two figures in the haze on the hill represent all the ancestors from long ago - those you may never have known, yet who remain intrinsic to your every breath.

I then thought about the family members I have recently lost, who helped shape and mould me into the person I am today. The second tier of the painting therefore depicts a traditional funeral march.

What many people do not notice are the green shadow figures marching in the opposite direction. They are heading towards the hill to join the ancestors who are waiting to greet them.

The third tier of the painting represents the entire cycle of life, which is much the same for all of us. At the centre, the couple represents family, home and children. Spiralling outward from them are the many elements of life and living: fellowship, spiritual life, education, vocation, military service, play, happiness and sadness - all of which we encounter throughout the cycle of life.

The border represents the fabrics of Africa. As the mother continent, these fabrics are interwoven throughout all our lives.

In its truest meaning, this painting represents families everywhere. It represents the cycle of life.

Box and Poster Info

• A poster is only included if the box cover says "Poster Included" below our logo.
• In 2023, our 1000 piece to 275 piece boxes downsized from 10" x 14" x 2.38" to 8.25" x 11.25" x 2.0" and a depth of 3.75" for the 2000 piece. However, until all retailers and our warehouse have completely sold out, there will be a mix of box sizes. Please check for this detail if that matters to you.
• Pre-2018 we did not include posters with our puzzles. The pre-2018 box frame colour is beige as opposed to green, blue, or red/rust.
• Modular boxes that are a "square-ish" size of 7.5" x 8.0" x 2.5" do not include posters.
• In 2025, our Floor Puzzle box changed to include a rope handle and a sample puzzle piece.
• Tray puzzles are shrink wrapped, not in a box.
